Description

The Fagin of France after Condemnation

Punch (London Charivari) Illustration (P125/XIII)

Original 1847 Print

This original 1847 punch illustration is taken from the Vol.12.13 'London Charivari' magazine, printed by Bradbury & Evans, Whitefriars, London in 1847

Punch, the magazine of humour and satire, ran from 1841 until its closure in 2002. A very British institution with an international reputation for its witty and irreverent take on the world, it published the work of some of the greatest comic writers (Thackeray, P G Wodehouse and P J O’Rourke among others) and gave us the cartoon as we know it today. Its political cartoons swayed governments while its social cartoons captured life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The world’s finest cartoonists appeared in Punch: such great names as Tenniel, E H Shepard, Fougasse, and Pont.

A succession of superb artists on Punch ensured that the manner in which it played safe was brilliant. The drawings of Leech, Keene, du Maurier, Tenniel and many only slightly lesser men may not have prompted any revolutions or moves to man the barricades, but they still represent the most authentic and memorable picture of Victorian England that we have left.

Although the book its self is in fairly good order for its age, a huge decision has been made to 'break' it to release the Illustrations from it. After much discussion & deliberation we can now offer this illustration to you direct from the original book.

The dimensions of the Page/Illustration are:

20.5cm X 27.5cm Approx

This illustration is from page 125 Vol. 13 from the Punch Annual & although there is nothing on the reverse of the page, the writing beneath the illustration states:

The Fagin of France after Condemnation
